420 medals up for grabs
4 ambulances
and 1 great covers band…

When your fav band were offered the prestigious gig to entertain the phinest athletes the MOD had to offer at DSRA Sports Day, Bath University, it seemed like an ideal opportunity to try out ‘The Phantoms Jukebox’. The idea: you request it, we'll play it (within reason)! As soon as the gig was confirmed & we had cancelled our pre-arranged slot at the Glastonbury Festival on the same day, we then realized we had to learn something in the region of 60 songs for this idea to work. Blimey! Who’s idea was that? Anyhoo, fast forward a few months & despite the best attempts of the weather on the day, plus feeling slightly worse for wear after the previous evening, the Phantoms duly delivered 3 epic sets of about 45 songs in total over the course of the afternoon to the 1400 competitors in attendance and a truly great day was had by all. With the choice & order of songs up to the crowd, the band kicked off with a cover of 3 Lions. We were hoping this would get a euphoric response as England romped through the early stages of the World Cup Finals. Oh well, best laid plans! So, with the Jukebox requests flooding in the band were soon asked to be joined on stage by passing punters Georgia & Lorna (who with a little help from their mobile phones providing the words) delivered a rousing rendition of Coldplay’s ‘Yellow’ whilst at the same time providing a welcome bit of eye candy to the Phantoms line-up. Thanks girls. The first & last time you will probably see lycra leggings on the Phants stage! Credit must also be given to the crowd from DMS, Whittington who despite the sometime inclement weather danced the afternoon away. An amazing 47 songs later the band brought the endurance test to a close just before we fell down. Who would have thought playing music was so tiring? Guess this was Sports Day after all. Now, where are our medals? Thanks to all of you that helped choose the songs, thanks to all of you that took the time to listen to us (handy that the bar wasn’t very far away) & huge thanks to Dom at DSRA for inviting us to play and provide the entertainment. Hope to see you all again next year.

The Phantoms were: Mark Gibson (lead vocals & keys), Kevin Rogers (guitar), Jason Biggs (guitar & vocals), Jon Novice (bass & vocals) & Alun Westoll (drums & vocals).
