#97. The Oak, Kingston. 9.2.19.

The wait is (ph)inally over as the Phantoms made a the welcome return back to their old stomping ground, Kingston, at lovely new venue The Oak Pub. And what a fantastic venue it turned out to be. Great crowd, great sound & thankfully, a great band!
After an uncharacteristically stress free set-up the boys took to the stage opening with a song played at our first ever gig nearly 20 years ago. The crowd (well, long standing phan, Mike ‘the hat’) was instantly up on the dance floor & it wasn’t long until he had plenty of people to dance with as the band pumped out an impressive string of quality punk classics. Highlight of the opening set was a rousing rock rendition of Kim Wilde’s ‘Kids in America’ which went down a storm.
Set two saw more of the same, and kicked off early doors with the fantastic ‘Mr Brightside’ by the Killers, a song that the current Phantom line-up had never played live before. And from the crowd’s reaction I think we will be doing this one for quite some time now!
The party mood continued inside the Oak & before we knew it, it was time for the encore, and another new Phantom cover, ‘Sweet Caroline’ by Neil Diamond. An instant crowd fav! And a real ear worm (I’m still singing it in my head 12 hours later)! The crowd were still demanding more & so after a couple of hastily hashed together & completely unrehearsed encores the boys finally stepped down to mingle with the crowd before setting off into the red light hell of the late night Kingston one way system!
Thanks to Ermir at the Oak for asking us to play (& I’m pleased to announce we have been asked back later in the year!), thanks to Richard Fletcher (ex Landlord of the Grey Horse) for putting in a good word for us & getting us the gig and huge thanks to the impressive Oak crowd (old & new friends alike) for the fantastic support. x

The Phantoms were: Mark Gibson (lead vocals & keys), Kevin Rogers (guitar), Jason Biggs (guitar & vocals), Jon Novice (bass & vocals), Alun Westoll (drums & vocals).
