#110. OwenStock, Lightwater, Surrey. 7.5.22.

First gig of 2022 saw the Phantoms back at CazFest (or OwenStock as it was rebranded this time round) for the second year running. For those that remember CazFest, we were obviously the standout talent on that occasion as the other band on the bill (The Real Thing) weren’t asked back! Although a more realistic scenario was probably that we were an infinitely a more affordable option!
Anyway… Once all the gear was set up & the band had enjoyed possibly one too many visits to the Pimms stand, the boys got done to business entertaining the Lightwater garden crowd with a set of foot tapping well known indie bangers that the OwenStock massive had come to expect.
Set one drew to a close with new Phantom cover, Jet’s ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’, and the band then joined the party goers to refuel on copious amounts of pizza before returning to action.
As the sun set, the Phantoms took to the stage for the closing set & right on cue, the festival throng took to the dancefloor to accompany the band for the remainder of the evening. And with a set jam packed full of sure-fire dancefloor fillers, the punters were not disappointed, singing & dancing along with gusto.
The tried & tested festival favs came thick and fast (ABBA, Monkees, ‘Sweet Caroline’, ‘YMCA’, ‘Time Warp’) and with the neighbour’s noise curfew rapidly approaching the OwenStock crowd were treated to an epic climax of more new songs. The appropriately entitled ‘Celebration’ by Kool & The Gang & finally the Spice Girls classic ‘Wannabe’, featuring special guest Kim back on vocals. Nice one Kim. You made a much more convincing spice girl than the Phantoms lead singer. Or Old Spice as he’s now known!
A fantastic night was had by all (apart from the immediate neighbours who had insisted the loud music finish by 9.30)! Party poopers. Thanks to birthday boy Owen for again asking us to play. Hope you enjoy your retirement. See you again soon.

The Phantoms were: Mark Gibson (lead vocals & keys), Kevin Rogers (guitar), Jason Biggs (guitar & vocals) & Alun Westoll (drums & vocals).
