#106. Cazfest, Lightwater, Surrey. 12.9.21.
So after arriving early & setting up alongside the headliners road crew the ‘Real Phantoms’ (as we decided to call ourselves on this occasion) sat back and awaited the Cazfest crowd to gather. Or ‘Caz est’ as our hosts tour jacket read! Well, there’s obviously no f in Cazfest! So what is Cazfest I hear you ask? If you were to imagine a slightly smaller version of the Rewind Festival held in a back garden in Lightwater you’ve pretty much got the idea.
First to warm up the expectant masses before the arrival of the main act were ‘The Real Phantoms’, who delivered their opening set, packed full of sure fire well known garden party standards. And as the sun began to sink over the horizon behind the festival fun fair (by which I mean grandchildren’s trampoline) the boys bought the opening set to a close with a couple of disco classics of their own, ‘YMCA’ by The Village People’ & ABBA’s ‘Waterloo’.
So with the throng well & truly in the mood, it was time for the main act. So, bang on cue, a large flashy car pulled up in the drive & the Real Thing exploded onto stage, going on to deliver a fantastically well-rehearsed & energetic 45 min set of 70’s disco classics to a pumping backing track & flashy light show. Considering these guys are now pensioners they put on an amazing show to the fully appreciate audience. And no sooner was their set over, they were whisked out of the ‘arena’ and straight back into their car leaving their roadies to clear up & the ‘Real Phantoms’ carry on with the night’s entertainment. Follow that Phantoms!
But the boys rose to the challenge & soon had the Cazfest massive singing & dancing along (or I think they were as it was a bit dark to see)! Massive thanks to party girl Kim for lending a hand on the vocals during The Killer’s ‘Mr Brightside’ (as well as adding a welcome dose of glamour to the Phantoms line-up)! And before we knew it, with the dance tent (gazebo!) packed, it was sadly time to bring the festival to a close. With just enough time to indulge the festival goers with one last sing along as the crowd bade for more. Lets do the Time Warp again Cazfest!
Thanks to birthday girl Carol (Caz) for letting us be a part of her fantastic day as well as host’s Owen & Sue who looked after us so well. What a fantastic day! Roll on Cazfest 22!
Incidentally, here’s a link to the Real Things Wikipedia page. In the past when the Phantoms attempted to submit a Wikipedia page it was removed with the reason “unremarkable people, does not assert importance or significance”. Well, who’s unremarkable now Wikipedia!
|The Phantoms were: Mark Gibson (lead vocals & keys), Kevin Rogers (guitar), Jason Biggs (guitar & vocals) & Alun Westoll (drums & vocals).|
