#104. Private Party, Cambridgeshire. 7.8.21.

So, after many long months in the wilderness (damn you COVID!) & thanks to our ever aging Phan base, a couple of big birthdays provided the welcome opportunity for the Phantoms return to action. Even if it was 100 miles away up the A1(M)!

So, once the band had found Wimblington & set up our gear we settled down in the expansive marquee with a beer in hand and waited for the lucky party goers to gather! This provided the perfect opportunity to have a nice chat with the birthday boys mum, (Hazel) & hatch plans for a surprise guest appearance later in the evening.

Fast forward an hour or two & the Phantoms got down to the job in hand, thrilled to finally be playing live music again after a break of 20 months. Thanks to birthday girl Helen, the Fenland funsters were straight up on the dancefloor & before we knew it the end of the opening set was upon us.

In preparation for this event the birthday girl had asked us if could surprise the birthday boy by playing his favourite song, Van Halen’s ‘Jump’. The ever obliging Phantoms took the challenge & so closed the first set with a double surprise. Not only the first ever airing of Martin’s fav song, but also getting to see his mum join the band! Fantastic.

After a brief interval to stock up on hog roast, birthday cake & free beer, as the twilight turned to darkness & the light show turned the marquee into something reminiscent of the Glastonbury dance tent, the band then powered through an upbeat second set. All the Phantoms were notably loving the return of live music, and with the dancefloor rocking, so were the crowd, who were bizarrely invaded by a pair of dinosaurs at one point! I can only presume that t-rex’s are indigenous to Fenland (it’s weird up here)!

So, with the closing songs whipping the crowd up to fever pitch, the band were invited to try another new tune as an encore, a rousing rendition of the Proclaimers ‘500 Miles’.

And the fun didn’t stop there as we still had time for a little go on the bouncy castle before the long drive home (thankfully not 500 miles)!

Massive thanks to our hosts for asking us to play & many happy returns to you both. It’s great to be back! x

The Phantoms were: Mark Gibson (lead vocals & keys), Kevin Rogers (guitar), Jason Biggs (guitar & vocals), Jon Novice (bass & vocals) & Alun Westoll (tiny drums & vocals).
